Too Little or Just Enough?
Navigating Boundaries in Stories for Young Audiences
Join us at the KIDS Regio Berlinale Meeting Point, in cooperation with the Creative Europe Desk Berlin-Brandenburg.
This year’s focus is inspired by the findings of our pan-European research project, Keeping up with Children as an Audience, which shares the results of interviews with 374 children from 12 countries to help us understand how children across the continent perceive and engage with film.
Children want to be taken seriously and they want to be challenged, are key findings from the research. The worst thing a film can be for them is childish. This leads us to ask:
How much can children take in films and series? This year’s Berlinale Meeting Point explores the delicate balance between engaging young audiences with bold, emotional stories and ensuring their well-being. From themes of loss and death, to scary moments, horror elements and depictions of psychological or physical violence, we ask: Where is the line between challenging and overwhelming?
