Between Cliché and Authenticity: Sociocultural Representation in Children’s and Youth Films

Films for children and young people play an important role in shaping the world view and identity of young people. This makes it all the more important that socio-cultural diversity is adequately represented in films. Our panel discussed the challenges and opportunities of representing different realities in children’s and youth films.

Our panel was moderated by Anne Schultka, project manager of KIDS Regio. We were delighted to have two practical examples on the panel: Director David Wnendt talked about working on his film SUN AND CONCRETE (2023) and director Karin Heberlein about SAMI, JOE AND I (2020). Both films were part of our festival’s Youth Film Series.
