Peter Zizka
Peter Zizka initially trained as an art restorer. In 1983, he went to study graphics, design, and visual communication at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach. At the same time, he attended the Städelschule in Frankfurt and studied under Bruce McLean, among others. 1989 he founded Heine/Lenz/Zizka a agency for visual communication, together with Achim Heine and Michael Lenz. HLZ creates visual identities and brand presences. From communications to corporate design to sociallyrelevant exhibition projects. In the last 25 years they worked for the Städelmuseum Frankfurt, Kunsthalle Hamburg, Emil Nolde Stiftung, Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Leica Camera, Impossible, Messe Berlin/Frankfurt, among others.
In his „in between“ works he adopts a less agitative position than that of a communication guerrilla or an adbuster. The most well-known of these works is The Virtual Minefield, the first floor-based installation spanning art and design. Zizka won the gold award from the European Art Directors Club for The Virtual Minefield. It was shown at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, the Foreign Office in Berlin, the Hygiene Museum Dresden and the United Nations Visitors Center in New York.In 2008, Zizka won the design competition for the Kieler Woche Festival, following the likes of Anton Stankowski (1962), Wim Crouwel (1998) and Fons Hickmann (2002), 2010 he started an art project in Burundi by demilitarising weapons of the Hutu Tutsi Conflict and altering them into aestheticized design objects to make the discussion on the issue of small arms tangible on a broad communication level.2011 he received the fellowship of the Deutsche Akademie Rom Villa Massimo. Since 2015 he is one of the design curators of Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt.
